Saying No

It pains me to admit it but I’m a people pleaser by nature. I want to be helpful to anyone at any time. Unfortunately that is not possible.

Lately, the Lord has been showing me that some times I need to say no to good things so others have the opportunity to say yes. Both recent examples happened with a volunteer position at our church. I have volunteered in our church Vacation Bible School nursery for maybe 10 years. It has been a joy snuggling with babies while their mommies teach children about Jesus. Last year I felt a nudge about going in a different direction – stepping out of the nursery and helping with the worship service. The timing wasn’t right. I stayed in the nursery, loving on the babies.

This year for VBS, I was asked to help in the nursery, again. I said yes but also mentioned I’d love to help in worship. The opportunity was available!! I am now part of the worship team, learning the music and motions for an exciting VBS worship experience. What I didn’t realize is that another dear church friend was waiting for the opportunity to move into the babies room. She will be the one loving on babies, now! I love watching the Lord move!

It is easy to get stuck in a long held volunteer position. Don’t be afraid to re-evaluate your commitment periodically to see if the Lord wants you to stay there or move to another position.
