Homemade Gel Pack

Mr. Sweet had a little outpatient surgery this week. He handled it like a champ but I quickly realized we needed more than one ice pack to help him stay comfortable. I had planned on using ice from our freezer in a sealed bag. It was adequate but melted quickly.

I turned to the Internet for research. Turns out, you can make a great ice pack with items you probably already have laying around in your house! Here’s what you need:

2 cups water

1 cup rubbing alcohol

2 quart size plastic zipper bags

Mix the liquid ingredients together and pour into the first zipper bag. Place that bag into the second zipper bag to help avoid leaks. Place “ice pack” flat in the freezer for at least an hour.

Here’s why we love it:

✅The alcohol keeps the water from completely freezing and it becomes more of a “gel” ice pack.

✅It is much colder than ice cubes (I wrapped it in a microfiber towel to keep it from being too cold).

✅The gel pack stays cold for quite a while!

The largest drawback we noticed was the weight of the gel pack – it tends to be heavy.

Overall, we were pleased with these impromptu gel packs. I made two so they could rotate in and out of the freezer. If you need a larger gel pack, consider doubling the recipe and using a gallon plastic zipper bag. 😊
